On the first day of Ramadan, citizens in 6 provinces will observe the longest fast at 13 hours and 23 minutes, while those in 12 provinces will observe the shortest fast at 13 hours and 20 minutes.
Last year, the longest fast on the first day of Ramadan was observed in Sinop with 13 hours and 56 minutes, while the shortest fast was observed in Adana, Hatay, Kilis, Mersin, and Şanlıurfa with 13 hours and 47 minutes. The difference between the longest and shortest fasting durations in Turkey, which was 9 minutes last year, has decreased to 3 minutes this year.
WHO WILL OBSERVE THE FIRST IMSAK?
Gürhan Eren, an astronomer at the High Council of Religious Affairs of the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), stated in his explanation to AA that on Monday, March 11, when Ramadan begins, the first imsak (start of fasting) will be at 04:52 in Iğdır, and the last imsak will be at 06:02 in Çanakkale.
WHAT IS THE LONGEST FASTING DURATION?
Stating that the first iftar (breaking of the fast) will be at 18:13 in Iğdır and the last iftar will be at 19:24 in Çanakkale, Eren reported that the longest fast will be observed in Artvin, Kastamonu, Kırklareli, Samsun, Zonguldak, and Sinop with 13 hours and 23 minutes, and the shortest fast will be observed in Adana, Antalya, Gaziantep, Hakkari, Hatay, İzmir, Kilis, Mardin, Muğla, Şanlıurfa, Şırnak, and Van with 13 hours and 20 minutes.
WHAT IS THE FASTING DURATION IN HATAY?
Expressing that the similarity in fasting durations in some cities on the first day is due to the equinox on March 21, Eren said, "On the March 21 equinox, day and night durations are equal at the equator. On March 11, the first day of Ramadan this year, the fasting duration in Hatay is 13 hours and 20 minutes, while it is 13 hours and 23 minutes in Sinop."
WHICH PROVINCE WILL HAVE THE LAST IFTAR?
Providing information that on April 9, the last day of Ramadan, the first iftar will be at 18:42 in Hakkari and the last iftar will be at 19:55 in Edirne, Eren stated that on the last day, the longest fast will be observed in Sinop with 14 hours and 51 minutes, and the shortest fast will be observed in Hatay with 14 hours and 30 minutes.
Eren noted that after the equinox on March 21, days will be longer than nights, and since it will be 20 days past the equinox on the last day of Ramadan, the cities with the longest and shortest fasts will again be Sinop and Hatay.
