Haldun Dormen was born in Mersin as the son of a successful businessman.

He spent his entire life in Istanbul after his family returned there when he was six months old. He completed middle school at Galatasaray and high school at Robert College. He graduated with high honors from the theater department of Yale University in the United States.

He worked for a time in theaters and film studios in New York, Hollywood, and Paris. He returned to Istanbul in 1954 and made his debut before Turkish audiences in the play "Cinayet Var" (There is a Murder) at the Küçük Sahne, under the direction of Muhsin Ertuğrul. In 1957, he founded the Dormen Theater, and in the same years, he established the Pocket Theater (Cep Tiyatrosu), training hundreds of brilliant theater and film actors, including Erol Günaydın, Metin Serezli, Erol Keskin, İzzet Günay, Salih Güney, Altan Erbulak, Nisa Serezli, and Nevra Serezli. In 1963, he founded his own film company and produced the films "Bozuk Düzen" (1963) and "Güzel Bir Gün İçin" (1964).

Both films won best film awards in Antalya. However, despite the awards, the films lost significant money, leading Dormen to dedicate himself entirely to theater. In 1972, he was forced to close the theater due to financial reasons.
