WHY WAS KAĞIZMAN MAYOR MEHMET ALKAN REMOVED FROM OFFICE?
The statement issued by the Ministry of Interior read: "Due to the fact that Kars Kağızman District Mayor Mehmet ALKAN was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for 'Membership in an Armed Terrorist Organization' within the scope of the case file numbered 2020/44 at the Kars 2nd High Criminal Court;
Mehmet ALKAN has been suspended from office by the Ministry of Interior as a temporary measure in accordance with Article 127 of the Constitution and Article 47 of the Municipal Law No. 5393.
In accordance with Articles 45 and 46 of the Municipal Law No. 5393, Kağızman District Governor Okan DAŞTAN has been appointed by the Kars Governorship as the Acting Mayor of Kağızman."
WHO IS MEHMET ALKAN?
Kağızman Co-Mayor Mehmet Alkan was born in 1953 in the village of Kuruyayla in Kağızman. He completed his primary and secondary education in Kağızman and his high school education in Iğdır. After graduating from the Ankara Gazi Education Institute, he worked as a teacher for a period.
In his political career, he won the Kağızman Mayoral election in the 2009 local elections as a candidate on the DTP list, achieving an electoral victory against the MHP mayor who had governed the district for 10 years.
Alkan, who was a candidate from the DEM Party in the March 31, 2024 local elections, was re-elected mayor by receiving 32.68 percent of the votes. Since taking office, he has been managing the municipality together with Co-Mayor Güner Hatay.
On February 24, 2025, he was removed from office by the Ministry of Interior on charges of 'Membership in an Armed Terrorist Organization' and a trustee was appointed in his place.
