CHP member of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Council Nuri Aslan has been appointed as the acting Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Yesterday, a terror and corruption investigation was launched into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and district municipalities, and detention warrants were issued for 106 people, including IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. The handwritten proxy letter written by İmamoğlu yesterday was delivered to the IMM Private Secretary's Office. The letter states:
'Due to the investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, in order to ensure that the operations of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality are not disrupted, the duty of acting IMM Mayor will be carried out by IMM Council Member Nuri Aslan during this process.
The relevant letter sent by our Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor, Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu, stating that the duty of acting Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor will be carried out by Council Member Mr. Nuri Aslan during this period in order to ensure that the operations of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality are not disrupted due to the investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, is presented in the attachment.'
WHO IS NURİ ASLAN?
Nuri Aslan was born in Sivas in 1969. After completing his primary and secondary education in Istanbul, he was admitted to the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of Yıldız Technical University. After graduating in 1990, he began his professional career and started working at a private company in 1991. Today, he serves as the General Manager of the same company.
His interest in politics began when he served as a Municipal Council Member in Istanbul's Küçükçekmece district between 1999 and 2004. Subsequently, he served as the Deputy Chairman of the Kızılay Küçükçekmece branch between 2009 and 2017. Between 2014 and 2018, he assumed the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Beylikdüzü Industrialists and Business People Association (BEYİSİAD).
In 2024, Nuri Aslan was elected as the 1st Deputy Speaker of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Council from the CHP.
