WHY WAS MÜMİN EROL DETAINED?

DEM Party Bitlis-Tatvan Co-Mayor Mümin Erol was detained on charges of insulting AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Erol was taken from the municipal building to the police station to provide a statement. The mayor's statement procedures at the police station are ongoing.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On the day he received his mandate and began his duties, Erol removed the photograph of AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from his office. Following the circulation of footage of those moments on social media, the Tatvan Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an ex officio investigation into Erol on June 6 on charges of "insulting the president."

WHO IS MÜMİN EROL?

Mümin Erol was born in 1981 in the Tatvan district of Bitlis. Completing his primary and secondary education in Tatvan, Erol graduated from Bitlis Anatolian Teacher High School. Graduating from Marmara University Faculty of Law in 2004, Erol continued his career as a lawyer. Erol was nominated for the Tatvan Mayoralty by the DEM Party in the March 31 local elections and was elected with 48.52 percent of the vote.
