Speaking to journalists at the EFES-2024 Exercise in İzmir, Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler made a statement regarding mandatory military service.

Minister Güler stated that the military is not considering a fully professional system, saying, "I am of the opinion that the children of the Republic of Turkey absolutely have an obligation to take part in the defense of the homeland. Our approach to this matter is for it to be 50 percent professional and 50 percent mandatory military service."

According to the report by Hürriyet columnist Fatih Çekirge, Yaşar Güler said that mandatory military service is also back on the agenda in European countries.

Güler said the following regarding mandatory military service:

"When the conditions our country is in are evaluated, it will be understood that this is the correct approach. We see that countries in Europe that switched to professional military service are re-evaluating returning to mandatory military service. Most recently, this issue is on the agenda in the UK."
