The proposed amendment to the law regarding stray animals has divided public opinion since the day it was brought to the agenda.
While discussions regarding the legal amendment continue, the "Draft Law on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law" was accepted and brought to Parliament.

WILL STRAY ANIMALS BE EUTHANIZED?
According to Article 5 of the Draft Law on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law, "animals taken into shelters that are aggressive, have contagious or untreatable diseases, or are prohibited from being owned will be euthanized by local governments" using the euthanasia method.
WHAT IS ARTICLE 5 OF THE STRAY ANIMAL LAW?
The following statements are included in Article 5 of the law:
"ARTICLE 5- The phrase 'Killing' in the heading of the Second Part, Fourth Section of Law No. 5199 has been changed to 'Euthanasia', the heading of Article 13 has been changed to 'Euthanasia of animals', the following paragraphs have been added to the article to precede the first paragraph, and the phrase 'Principles and procedures for killing' in the second sentence of the existing second paragraph has been changed to 'Principles and procedures regarding killing and euthanasia'.
"Euthanasia shall be performed by local governments on animals taken into shelters that are aggressive, have contagious or untreatable diseases, or are prohibited from being owned.
In the event that the stray animal population poses a danger to public safety, causes the emergence of diseases transmitted from animal to animal or from animal to human, or causes damage to water resources, wildlife, and biodiversity, euthanasia may be performed on stray animals by the relevant local government."
