Will Turkey declare a national day of mourning for Iran?

Following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his accompanying delegation in a helicopter crash, the question of whether a national day of mourning will be declared in Turkey has become a subject of curiosity.

Most recently, President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had announced a 3-day national mourning period due to Israel's attacks on Gaza.

ON WHICH OCCASIONS HAS TURKEY DECLARED MOURNING?

Turkey declared its first national mourning on November 10, 1938, following the passing of the founder of the Republic, the great leader Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Subsequently, a national day of mourning was declared in 1973 for the 2nd President of the Republic of Turkey, İsmet İnönü.

THE FIRST MOURNING FOR FOREIGN COUNTRIES

The national mourning declared following the death of Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 was the first mourning declared in Turkey following an event that occurred outside the country.

WILL A NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING BE DECLARED FOR IRAN?

Most recently, no further mourning decisions had been made following the declaration of national mourning after the attack on civilians in Gaza.

The decision for a national day of mourning is made by the Presidency, and it is not yet known whether President and AKP Chairman Erdoğan will declare a period of mourning.
