Artificial intelligence is being used to imitate the voices and images of famous people and to prepare misleading videos. Birgül Güden, who clicked on a video advertisement prepared with artificial intelligence, was defrauded of 650 thousand liras.
'MY WORLD HAS GONE DARK'
Clicking on the fake video link created with artificial intelligence, Birgül Güden said, “The moment I clicked, they called me. They accessed my accounts by directing me, that is, via Skype. They entered my accounts and took out money and loans, and I had no idea about any of this. Not until the day before my child was supposed to go to university. I went to the bank, and they said, 'There is this much money in your account, it has been withdrawn, you have a debt.' They said I couldn't perform any transactions, and my world has gone dark since that day.”
'I AM NOT IN A POSITION TO PAY'
Stating that she has no means to pay off the loans taken out in her name from banks, Güden said, “They called me after that day. 'You won't pay any money. You will just earn this much money for investment purposes.' Nothing like that ever happened. They ruined me. I am a mother of two working for minimum wage. My child dropped out of university and came back because of this. My child was studying at university. There is no way, I mean, working for minimum wage, I am not in a position to pay this money.”
'I USED TO SAY I WOULD NEVER BE FOOLED'
Birgül Güden said, “People shouldn't say, 'I wouldn't do such a thing, if it happened to me, I wouldn't do this or that.' Because I was one of them. When I saw or heard about it, I would think, 'How do these people get fooled? Don't they think at all?' But it turns out it happens. I don't know how it happened, how it ended. Do they hypnotize you? They have a strange way of speaking. Even you would believe them.”
THEY ARE STILL ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Noting that she filed a complaint after what she went through, Güden said, “First I went to the police station. May God bless them. They guided me, they told me what to do, and I went to the prosecutor's office. It is currently with the prosecutor's office. But I want greater help from higher authorities. Because they are still circulating on Instagram, I mean, in the media.”
