Women are invisible in business life too! TurkStat shares 2023 'women' statistics

According to the Address Based Population Registration System (ABPRS) results, as of December 31, 2023, the female population was 42 million 638 thousand 306, while the male population was 42 million 734 thousand 71. In other words, women made up 49.9% of the total population, while men made up 50.1%. 

This proportional balance between women and men shifted in favor of women starting from the 60 and above age group due to women living longer. The proportion of the female population was 52.1% in the 60-74 age group, while it was 70.2% in the 90 and above age group.

WOMEN LIVE LONGER THAN MEN

According to the Life Tables results, while the life expectancy at birth for the 2020-2022 period was 77.5 years for Turkey as a whole, it was 80.3 years for women and 74.8 years for men. It was observed that, in general, women live longer than men and the difference in life expectancy at birth is 5.5 years.

HEALTHY LIFE EXPECTANCY OF WOMEN 

According to the Life Tables results, healthy life expectancy, which refers to the number of years a person at a certain age is expected to live without a health problem that would limit their daily activities, was 58.4 years for a person at age zero in the 2020-2022 period across Turkey, while it was 57.0 years for women and 59.7 years for men. Accordingly, it was observed that the healthy life expectancy of men at birth was 2.7 years longer than that of women. 

ONE IN EVERY 4 WOMEN IS OBESE 

According to the results of the Turkey Health Survey, when the body mass index calculated using height and weight values was examined, it was seen that in 2022, 20.2% of individuals aged 15 and over were obese, and 35.6% were pre-obese. When the proportion of obese individuals was examined by gender, it was seen that 23.6% of women were obese and 30.9% were pre-obese, while 16.8% of men were obese and 40.4% were pre-obese. 

WOMEN'S AVERAGE YEARS OF SCHOOLING IS 8.5 YEARS 

According to National Education Statistics, it was observed that the average years of schooling increased over the years. While the average years of schooling for Turkey as a whole was 7.3 years in 2011, with 6.4 years for women and 8.3 years for men, it became 9.2 years for Turkey as a whole in 2022, with 8.5 years for women and 10.0 years for men.

ONLY 1 IN EVERY 5 MPS IS A WOMAN 

According to the data of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, as of the end of 2023, it was observed that out of 599 members of parliament, the number of female MPs was 119, while the number of male MPs was 480. While the proportion of female MPs in the parliament was 9.1% in 2007, it was 19.9% in 2023. 

PROPORTION OF FEMALE PROFESSORS IS 33.9 PERCENT

According to Higher Education Statistics, the proportion of female professors among professors working in higher education was 27.6% in the 2010-2011 academic year and 33.9% in the 2022-2023 academic year. The proportion of female associate professors among associate professors working in higher education was 32.2% in the 2010-2011 academic year and 40.8% in the 2022-2023 academic year.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS LIFE

According to the results of the Household Labour Force Survey, the proportion of women in senior and middle management positions in companies was 14.4% in 2012 and 19.6% in 2022.

WOMEN MARRY AT AN AVERAGE AGE OF 25.7

According to Marriage Statistics, the average age at first marriage for women who officially married for the first time in 2023 was 25.7, while the average age at marriage for men was 28.3. The province with the highest average age at first marriage was Tunceli, with 29.0 years for women and 32.7 years for men. The province with the lowest average age at first marriage was Ağrı for women at 22.9 years, and Şanlıurfa for men at 26.2 years.

WOMEN'S ACCESS TO THE INTERNET 

According to the results of the Household Information and Communication Technology Usage Survey, the internet usage rate for individuals in the 16-74 age group was 87.1% in 2023. This rate was 83.3% for women and 90.9% for men.
