Workers' food protest at Akkuyu: Insects, hair, and even a condom found in meals

Workers who say they are working in inhumane conditions and have found foreign objects in their food have gone on strike in protest. On the other hand, it is stated that an average of 500 workers are being laid off every day without any justification. 

According to Sol Haber, workers employed under the İçtaş company at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, which is under construction in Mersin, have not received their salaries since January. 

The gendarmerie was sent to the site in response to the demands of the workers, who drew attention to the poor conditions at the construction site and said, "This is not a construction site, it's like a Nazi camp."

"INSECTS, HAIR, AND EVEN A CONDOM WERE FOUND"

One worker describes the problems he is experiencing with these words:

"If so many workers were going to be laid off in such a short time, why were they hired? We are already struggling in barracks. We have no money, nor do we have the right to work humanely. The money we get is peanuts. We sleep and wake up in filthy places, and food with filth in it is put in front of us. For what? We are already working for almost nothing. This treatment is truly shameful."

According to the workers' claims, insects, hair, and even a condom were found in the food. One worker described the situation he experienced as follows:

"I filmed it in front of my friends. They wouldn't believe me if I just told them. I even sent some of the videos to those who didn't come to eat that day. There is a food problem. The other day, a used condom was found in the yogurt at dinner. What kind of heartlessness is this?"

"NOT A CONSTRUCTION SITE, A NAZI CAMP"

The gendarmerie was sent to the construction site to intervene against the workers who started a strike. However, the workers state that they will not take a step back:

"We have no fear of being fired. This is not a construction site, it's like a Nazi camp. We are treated like dogs."

A worker who signed a resignation paper following the problems experienced says, "I would rather go back to my hometown and sit in my house than work like this. It is a shame and a sin." 

"There are about 50 workers who have been laid off. We just checked the account and 29 thousand liras were deposited. That is January's money. Where is February? Where is our overtime? Where are the raises? The same thing continues when they put us out on the street," he says, describing the problems the workers are facing. 

While the workers' struggle continues, no statement has yet come from Akkuyu.
