The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Council has recognized cemevis as places of worship with a decision it adopted. Following the decision, the newspaper Yeni Akit targeted IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on its front page today.

Stating "İmamoğlu is playing with fire," the front page of the Yeni Akit newspaper included the following remarks: "Experts, who state that the recognition of cemevis as 'places of worship' is a constitutional matter and that this issue exceeds the authority of municipal councils, have united in the view that 'İmamoğlu does not hesitate to set the country on fire for his own political career.'"

In the report, which claims that the decision in question has caused "outrage," the move was described as "an attempt at political engineering by İmamoğlu," and the decision was evaluated as "a move to detach Alevis from Islam."
