Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ, who was under investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for "insulting the President" due to his remarks regarding AKP President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during his party's Provincial Chairmen Consultation Meeting on January 19, has been detained in Ankara.
Zafer Party Deputy Chairman Bartu Soral stated in a live broadcast that Ümit Özdağ was detained while he was eating.
Ümit Özdağ was discharged from the Ankara State Railways Hospital, where he had been taken for a medical examination. He is being brought to the Istanbul Police Department to have his statement taken.
If the statement procedures are completed tonight, he will be referred to the prosecutor's office tomorrow.

Zafer Party General Administrative Board member and lawyer Paşa Büyükkayaer made the following statements during a live broadcast:
"Two breaks were taken along the way, and we saw that high security measures were taken. The most painful part of what is happening is that Ümit Özdağ is being detained like a common criminal. A message is being sent through the Chairman.
Our Chairman's health is good...
We now expect the same support from members of other parties that our Chairman has given them."
BROUGHT TO VATAN POLICE HEADQUARTERS AT 01:00
Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ was taken inside through the police department's parking lot. Lawyer Paşa Büyükkayaer shared the information that this method was chosen to avoid contact with the crowd waiting outside.
BAN ON DEPUTIES BY POLICE
Requests by opposition party deputies to meet with Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ were rejected. After their superiors stated that such a meeting would not be permitted, the deputies stated in a press release that they would disperse and invited everyone to be in front of the Çağlayan Courthouse in the morning hours.

Özdağ had used the following expressions in his speech:
"Rest assured that no Crusade in the last thousand years has caused as much damage to the Turkish nation and the Turkish state as Erdoğan and the AKP have. No Crusade has been able to infiltrate spies into the Turkish State."
An investigation had been launched against Özdağ for "insulting the President" due to these statements.
