Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel said that the European Central Bank's borrowing costs are near their peak, but a new inflation crisis could require further tightening.
Germany's top monetary policy official said on Wednesday, "I believe we are close to what we see as the terminal rate. I think interest rates will remain at the same level for some time."
The ECB's record-high interest rates have led most observers to predict that policymakers will not raise borrowing costs again. Officials held steady in October, and President Christine Lagarde said earlier this month that there would be no reduction in the "next few quarters."
Contrary to the view held by hawkish board members like Nagel, markets are not convinced that interest rate cuts will happen as early as April. Nagel stated, "There are still some risk factors that could trigger another round of inflation. So, nobody knows what will happen next."
The European Central Bank's interest rate moves have increased the possibility that the Eurozone economy could suffer more serious damage; Vice President Luis de Guindos told Bloomberg Television earlier on Wednesday that investors' expectations of a so-called soft landing might be "wishful thinking."
Nagel, on the other hand, took a more optimistic stance, saying he was not worried that the Eurozone would enter a situation that would cause a "hard landing" and that most of the economic slowdown had already occurred.
