European stock markets are making headlines with new records in 2026. The STOXX Europe 600 index, which tracks the continent, extended its gains to a third consecutive trading day, closing at approximately 657 points after hitting a new intraday high on Wednesday, August 5.
The EURO STOXX 50, which covers major companies in the eurozone, also tested an all-time high during the day. While the broader market indicator has risen by approximately 10 percent since the beginning of the year, historic levels were also seen in Europe's major national indices.
In Germany, the DAX climbed above 26,100 points for the first time, while France's CAC 40 index reached a record level of 8,700 points. In Italy, the FTSE MIB recorded a new peak, rising to the 53,540 level.
DRIVING FORCES OF THE RALLY
The rise in Europe is not being driven solely by major consumer brands or traditional defense stocks. The most notable performances of 2026 have been concentrated in companies providing the physical infrastructure behind artificial intelligence investments. Companies operating in the fields of semiconductor materials, chip testing equipment, advanced substrates, photonics, and industrial technology have moved to the forefront of the market.
One of the factors supporting the rally was geopolitical expectations. News that Washington and Tehran are nearing an agreement on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil prices down. This limited inflation concerns and strengthened expectations that cost pressures could ease for industrial companies and airlines in Europe.
Macroeconomic data also supported the market's risk appetite. According to Eurostat's flash estimate, the eurozone economy grew by 0.4 percent in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter. This rate came in above the general expectations of economists. Annual growth accelerated to 1.0 percent.
Claus Vistesen, chief eurozone economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, assessed that the second-quarter growth came in comfortably above expectations and pointed to a stronger picture following the flat trend in the first quarter.
Corporate earnings also provided additional support for the rise. While many companies reported performance above expectations in their second-quarter results, the global investment appetite for AI infrastructure brought small and medium-sized technology suppliers in Europe to the fore.
2026'S TOP-PERFORMING EUROPEAN STOCKS
Among the STOXX Europe 600 components with a market capitalization of 1 billion euros or more, the 10 stocks that have shown the highest performance year-to-date as of August 5 are listed as follows:
| Rank | Company | 2026 performance | Key reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Soitec | +%414.5 | Expectation of recovery in semiconductor materials and photonics revenues |
| 2 | AT&S | +%343.5 | Demand for advanced substrates for AI data centers |
| 3 | Tullow Oil | +%136.4 | Upward revision of free cash flow expectations |
| 4 | ams-OSRAM | +%136.2 | Recovery in sensors and photonics, microLED expectations |
| 5 | Technoprobe | +%135.1 | Strong demand for AI-linked chip testing equipment |
| 6 | AIXTRON | +%121.0 | Increase in orders for photonics and power chip production equipment |
| 7 | STMicroelectronics | +%105.7 | Signs of recovery in the semiconductor sector |
| 8 | Saipem | +%75.8 | Offshore energy investments and strong order book |
| 9 | Raiffeisen Bank International | +%67.6 | Resilient profitability in Central and Eastern European operations |
| 10 | ArcelorMittal | +%65.3 | EU import quotas and strong steel profitability |
Soitec, at the top of the list, became the best-performing component of the STOXX Europe 600 with a 414.5 percent rise year-to-date. Despite the company reporting a decline in annual revenue, investors focused on the growth in its photonics unit and the strong outlook in cash flow.
AT&S, in second place, drew attention for producing advanced substrates that connect AI processors and memory chips in high-performance servers. The company announced that it expects a 30-35 percent increase in its revenues this year due to the impact of investments in AI data centers.
While Tullow Oil was the only energy company in the top 10, the weight of technology and semiconductor suppliers revealed a shift in direction in the European market. In European stock markets, which are traditionally associated with luxury, pharmaceutical, and banking stocks, companies in the AI infrastructure chain have taken the lead in the market this time.
