Alarming picture in unemployment data: Large-scale losses recorded

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released labor force statistics for the July-September period. According to the shared data, the number of unemployed people in the country was recorded at 3 million 10 thousand.

The unemployment rate remained unchanged compared to the previous quarter, standing at 8.5 percent. High unemployment rates, particularly among youth and women, and a significant decline in the industrial sector drew attention.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE REMAINS STABLE

Looking at the data, it was reported that the number of unemployed decreased by 26 thousand people compared to the previous period, falling to 3 million 10 thousand. However, despite this decrease, there was no change in the general unemployment rate, which was measured at 8.5 percent. The unemployment rate was 7.0 percent for men, while it reached 11.2 percent for women, maintaining a clear disparity between the genders.

EMPLOYMENT NUMBERS INCREASED, RATE REMAINED UNCHANGED

It was announced that the number of employed people increased by 65 thousand during the same period, rising to 32 million 558 thousand. Conversely, no change was observed in the employment rate, which remained stable at 49.0 percent. The employment rate for men was determined to be 66.2 percent, while this rate remained at 32.1 percent for women.

LIMITED INCREASE IN LABOR FORCE

It was stated that the labor force in the third quarter of the year increased by 39 thousand people compared to the previous quarter, reaching 35 million 568 thousand. The labor force participation rate was reported to have decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 53.5 percent. The labor force participation rate for men was 71.2 percent, while it was recorded at 36.2 percent for women.

UNEMPLOYMENT THREAT PERSISTS AMONG YOUTH

It was announced that the unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group remained at 15.3 percent despite a 0.5 percentage point decline. In this age group, unemployment was 11.7 percent for men, while it was determined to be 21.8 percent for young women, revealing a striking difference.

When examining sectoral data, it was stated that seasonally adjusted employment increased by 13 thousand in the agricultural sector, 40 thousand in construction, and 159 thousand in the service sector. In contrast, it was reported that a loss of 147 thousand jobs occurred in the industrial sector. In the general distribution, it was noted that 19.8 percent of the employed were in the industrial sector and 59.3 percent were in the service sector.

WORKING HOURS INCREASED

It was announced that the seasonally and calendar-adjusted average weekly actual working hours of the employed increased by 0.4 hours compared to the previous quarter, reaching 42.5 hours.
