A phone call between US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba provided positive signals regarding tariff negotiations. Trump stated that Japan needs to open its doors more to US products. These developments led to a buying-weighted trend in Asian stock markets.
The Chinese administration announced that it would protect its rights and take countermeasures in response to US customs duty threats. While the Chinese Ministry of Commerce firmly opposed Trump's threat of a 50 percent additional tariff, the People's Bank of China also encouraged the state fund to support the markets.
In Japan, the current account balance recorded a surplus of 4 trillion 61 billion yen in February, while the foreign trade surplus was recorded at 713 billion yen. These economic data also contributed to the rise in stock markets.
With the impact of these developments, the Nikkei 225 index in Japan rose by 6 percent to 33,012 points, and the Shanghai Composite index in China rose by 0.6 percent to 3,114 points. While the Kospi index in South Korea closed with a 0.3 percent increase at 2,334 points, the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong traded at 20,048 points with a 1.2 percent gain. In India, the Sensex index rose by 1.3 percent to 74,075 points.
