Providing tips on how to use natural gas more efficiently and economically in homes, Dr. Levent Bilir, a faculty member at Yaşar University's Department of Energy Systems Engineering, said, "For energy savings, insulation must first be provided in buildings. Keeping the combi boiler at a constant temperature instead of turning it on and off throughout the day will save energy and reduce bills."

Dr. Levent Bilir, a faculty member at the Department of Energy Systems Engineering at Yaşar University's Faculty of Engineering,offered suggestions for getting more efficiency from the natural gas used for heating in homes.
Stating that the first step to saving energy in residences begins with insulation, Dr. Levent Bilir said, "In a building with good insulation, the indoor temperature will not fluctuate significantly. Therefore, we can first save energy by not using fuel. Insulation in residences will become mandatory in the future. In this case, since the heat loss of buildings will decrease, naturally less fuel will be used. We often operate the combi boiler intermittently while using natural gas. Although this may seem like it saves fuel at first, it actually causes the walls of the house to cool down because the boiler stops heating. For this reason, running the boiler continuously but at a low setting is a solution that will provide fuel savings. However, do not set it to the maximum level and run it continuously." he said.
Stating that the temperature of the combi boiler should be adjusted according to one's own thermal comfort, Dr. Bilir said, "While adjusting this temperature, we must also take the temperature of the walls into account. Living spaces are considered to be an average of 21-22 degrees Celsius. But this situation can vary from person to person. The comfort temperature can be lowered to 20 degrees Celsius. To keep this temperature constant inside the house, running the boiler continuously at a low setting, for 24 hours or for long periods during the day, is a solution that will provide savings in natural gas. In addition, the temperature in less frequently used areas of the house, such as bathrooms, hallways, and dressing rooms, can be lowered to 18 degrees Celsius." he added.
"EVERYONE WITH A COMBI BOILER SHOULD RUN IT IN THEIR HOMES"
Stating that apartments exchange heat through their walls, Dr. Levent Bilir said, "Even if there is no legal obligation, everyone who has a combi boiler in an apartment building should run it in their homes. Double-glazed windows that are properly installed should be used in homes whenever possible. On the other hand, maintenance for combi boilers and radiators should be performed at regular intervals. Radiator maintenance is also of great importance for heat efficiency. Radiators can sometimes trap air. In such cases, if we bleed the air out, the radiator will start heating as it did before." he stated.
RECOMMENDATION TO USE AIR CONDITIONERS INSTEAD OF ELECTRIC HEATERS
Stating that electric heaters have low efficiency, Dr. Levent Bilir said, "If we do not have natural gas in our homes, let us use air conditioners instead of electric heaters if possible. New generation air conditioners are much more efficient in terms of electrical efficiency compared to electric heating devices that only provide heat directly through resistance. Although an air conditioner is more expensive than an electric heater in terms of initial investment, that difference closes over time." he noted.
