According to a report in Gazete Duvar; it is claimed in political circles that the person who recommended Erkan to AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was Baykar Technology General Manager Haluk Bayraktar.

According to the report; Erkan is a graduate of Istanbul High School, while Bayraktar is a graduate of Kabataş High School. Bayraktar studied in Ankara and Erkan in Istanbul, but both individuals received education in Industrial Engineering.
During the same years, Bayraktar was pursuing a doctorate at Columbia University, while Erkan was doing so at Princeton University.
