Borsa İstanbul closes the week with an 8.18% loss: MSCI announces critical threshold for Turkey

The BIST 100 index at Borsa İstanbul completed the week with an 8.18% decline, finishing at 13,284.42 points. While the dollar rose, the euro and gold retreated. Following the sharp losses in the markets, MSCI reiterated its previously expressed concerns regarding Turkish capital markets, warning that if concrete progress is not made by November 2026, a formal consultation process could be initiated for the Turkey index and related stocks.

The BIST 100 index at Borsa İstanbul completed the week with a sharp decline. The index fluctuated between 12,817.01 and 14,355.46 points during the week, falling 8.18% compared to the previous week's close to finish at 13,284.42 points.

The losses in the market were not limited to equities. On a weekly basis, investment funds lost 2.57%, while pension funds declined by 1.74%. Among investment funds, the best-performing category of the week was money market funds with a return of 0.65%.

WEEKLY OUTLOOK ON FOREIGN EXCHANGE AND GOLD

In the foreign exchange market, the US dollar finished the week with a 0.36% increase at 48.7810 liras. The euro, meanwhile, fell by 0.91% to 55.9580 liras.

In the Grand Bazaar, the gram selling price of 24-karat gold bullion decreased by 0.06% to 6,826 liras. The Republic gold coin was sold at 44,450 liras with a 0.09% decline, while the quarter gold coin was sold at 11,174 liras with a 0.14% loss.

Following the volatile week at Borsa İstanbul, the assessment of global index provider MSCI regarding Turkish markets also came to the fore. MSCI reiterated its previously expressed concerns regarding transparency, information flow, and market functioning in Turkish capital markets.

The institution's assessment emphasized that issues regarding shareholder structures in Turkish companies, free-float ratios, and coordinated trading behaviors need to be addressed. MSCI drew attention to the expectation of market participants for concrete progress within the scope of investability criteria.

MSCI stated that if sufficient, concrete, and reliable progress is not achieved by the November 2026 Index Review process, a formal consultation process could be initiated to evaluate the global status of the Turkey index and related stocks.
