The Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) approved the new bread price tariff to be applied across Istanbul during its July assembly meeting. According to this new regulation, the maximum price for 1 kilogram of bread has been set at 75 TL, and 200 grams of bread at 15 TL. In December of last year, 200 grams of bread were sold for 12.5 TL.
A 10 percent increase was proposed for the Adalar district, in which case 200 grams of bread could rise to 16.5 TL. These tariffs are expected to come into effect following the approval of the ITO Assembly. Bakers' requests for price updates due to rising costs in recent times had caused public debate.
Selim Şimşek, Vice Chairman of the ITO Bread, Flour, and Bakery Products Professional Committee, stated in his speech at the assembly that the maximum price is the upper limit that can be applied to bread. Şimşek said, "Companies can sell below this price but cannot exceed it. Production can be carried out in different weights, provided that the bread communiqué is followed." He also stated that 240 grams of bread could be sold for 18 TL and that this was appropriate.
In recent days, similar price increases had been made in businesses affiliated with the bakers' chamber, and the tariffs determined by the ITO had begun to be implemented.
