Card payments reached 1.45 trillion TL in September

The Interbank Card Center (BKM) has announced card payment data for September. Accordingly, as of September, the number of credit cards in Turkey reached 127.2 million, the number of debit cards reached 192.8 million, and the number of prepaid cards reached 103.1 million.

Compared to September 2023, there was a 13 percent increase in the number of credit cards, a 5 percent increase in the number of debit cards, and a 22 percent increase in the number of prepaid cards.

The total number of cards reached 423.1 million, showing an 11 percent increase compared to the same month last year.

DEVELOPMENT OF CARD PAYMENT AMOUNT

The total payment amount made with credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards in September increased by 79 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 1,449.4 billion TL.

While 1,220.3 billion TL of card payments were made with credit cards, 200.3 billion TL was made with debit cards, and 28.8 billion TL was made with prepaid cards.

The growth rate in payments made with credit cards compared to the same month of the previous year was 86 percent, while it was 48 percent for payments made with debit cards and 104 percent for payments made with prepaid cards.

DEVELOPMENT OF NUMBER OF CARD PAYMENT TRANSACTIONS

The total number of payments made with credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards in September increased by 13 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 1.58 billion.

While 913.2 million of the card payments were made with credit cards, 550.3 million were made with debit cards, and 117.2 million were made with prepaid cards.

The growth rate in the number of payments made with credit cards was 16 percent compared to the same month last year, while it was 4 percent for payments made with debit cards and 35 percent for payments made with prepaid cards.

DEVELOPMENT OF ONLINE CARD PAYMENT AMOUNT

Online card payments increased by 88 percent compared to the same month last year, rising to 428.5 billion TL. The share of online card payments in the total was 29 percent.

DEVELOPMENT OF NUMBER OF ONLINE CARD PAYMENTS

The number of online card payments increased by 11 percent compared to the same month last year, rising to 225.1 million. The share of online card payments in the total is 15 percent.

DEVELOPMENT OF CONTACTLESS PAYMENT AMOUNT

The number of contactless payments made with cards increased by 21 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching 1,048.4 million. The contactless payment amount increased by 93 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching 458.8 billion TL.

In September, approximately 4 out of every 5 card payments made in-store were contactless.
