CHP İzmir mayoral candidate hopeful Buğra Gökce on 'social housing': Buying a home has become a dream!

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate hopeful Buğra Gökce drew attention to İzmir's housing problem on X. Gökce stated that the average sale price of a 100-square-meter home has risen to 3 million 39 thousand liras.

Buğra Gökce, a CHP candidate hopeful for İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, drew attention to the housing crisis that is deepening across the country.

Stating that the average sale price of a 100-square-meter home in İzmir has risen to 3 million 39 thousand liras, Buğra Gökce noted that a person living on minimum wage would have to work for 15 years without eating or drinking to be able to own a home. 

“OWNING A HOME IS A RIGHT, NOT A LUXURY”

Sharing the statistics on his X account, Gökce said:

“Buying a home has become a dream for young people, workers, and retirees. According to open-source data, the average sale price of a 100m2 home in İzmir has risen to 3 million 39 thousand liras. For a minimum wage earner to be able to own a home, they need to work for exactly 178 months, which is about 15 years, without eating or drinking. Someone earning 50 percent above the minimum wage can own a home in 119 months, or 10 years, if they do not eat or drink. Owning a home is a right, not a luxury. The state is obligated to protect the housing rights of its citizens” 

STATEMENT ON SOCIAL HOUSING

Explaining the steps to be taken to alleviate the housing problem, Buğra Gökce continued:

“The most important reason for the crisis we are facing today is that this right, which is enshrined in the constitution, is not protected, and our cities are managed for rent rather than for the people. Our top priority will be to produce and offer social housing to our people through policies that will protect the right to housing, starting from İzmir, and increase the earthquake resistance of our cities. 

With a spirit of mobilization, with all of İzmir's strength, and by calling on the central government to take action with rational and concrete proposals, we will work to alleviate the housing crisis. With urban transformation projects that we will implement in place and by preserving the historical fabric, İzmir's earthquake resistance will increase, and our people will be able to breathe a little easier with social housing. We know our responsibility, and we know what we can do with the power and resources of İzmir. We will work for both İzmir and Turkey, and we will succeed together”
