The Ministry of Health has listed food recommendations that those fasting during Ramadan should follow to maintain healthy nutrition.
The list prepared by the Ministry includes examples of foods that should be consumed during iftar, suhoor, and snacks.
A MINIMUM WAGE EARNER CAN FAST FOR 16 DAYS, A PENSIONER'S FAMILY FOR 9.5 DAYS
According to the report by Deniz Ayhan from Sözcü, the cost of a daily iftar, snack, and suhoor for one person, based on the Ministry's list prepared with the cheapest options, reaches 257.75 TL. The daily fasting cost for a family of 4 is exactly 1031 TL. A family on minimum wage can only fast for 16 days with this recommendation, and a pensioner's family for 9.5 days. According to the Ministry's list, the monthly expense for a family of four fasting reaches 30,930 liras.
'DO NOT SKIP MEALS' RECOMMENDATION
Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca, in the recommendation presented with his signature, stated: “To maintain adequate and balanced nutrition, the suhoor meal should not be skipped, and main meals and snacks should be consumed. Healthy and balanced choices from the five food groups are necessary for meals.”
Example menus for suhoor, snacks, and iftar were provided as follows:
SUHOOR: A light breakfast consisting of milk, yogurt, cheese (75 grams 17.5 liras), eggs (1 piece 2.25 liras), whole grain breads (2 slices 2 liras), and raw vegetables/fruits can be eaten, or a meal consisting of soup (1 bowl 10 liras), olive oil dishes (portion 15 liras), yogurt (180 grams 17 liras), and salad (bowl 15 liras) can be preferred.
IFTAR: After breaking the fast with olives or dates and water, the meal can be started with soup and salad. Following this, meat-based vegetable dishes or lean meat dishes and olive oil vegetable dishes, salad or sliced vegetables, 1-2 slices of bread, or a small portion of rice or pasta can be consumed.
SNACK: Between iftar and suhoor, fruits, dried fruits, nuts, milk, yogurt, and fruit or milk-based desserts can be preferred.
