The Ministry of Trade announced that the customs duty on green lentil imports has been temporarily reduced to zero in order to ensure supply security for consumers and prevent price fluctuations.
In the statement made by the Ministry,, "As the Ministry of Trade, in order to ensure domestic supply security and price stability, product-based assessments are being conducted in coordination with relevant institutions, and necessary measures are being taken rapidly when needed" it was stated.
In this context, it was emphasized that, taking into account trade data, production and market supply conditions, and price movements, and in consultation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, it was decided to temporarily zero out the customs duty on green lentils, a staple food product, to ensure that consumer needs are met at affordable prices, and it was noted that the regulation regarding this has entered into force by making the necessary changes to the Import Regime Decree.
The statement continued as follows:
"The application in question has been determined by taking into account the harvest period in our country in a way that does not harm the production motivation of our farmers, while also considering the protection of domestic production. The reduced customs duty will continue for a temporary period until June 30, 2024, before the harvest season of green lentils, and will rise to its previous level after this date.
As the Ministry of Trade, we will continue to take all necessary measures to prevent speculative price movements and ensure sufficient product supply to the market in order to protect the rights of both producers and consumers, and we will continue to monitor market conditions following these measures."
