The volatility experienced in the markets during the morning hours, along with rising exchange rates, has once again drawn the attention of investors and citizens to the foreign exchange market. As the Turkish Lira continues to lose value against the US Dollar, the Dollar/TRY exchange rate reached 48.24, seeing its highest level in history. Similarly, the Euro/TRY also followed a new upward trend, climbing to the 56.22 level.
INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS AND THE FED EFFECT
The impact of developments in global markets on the volatility in money markets has begun to become apparent. Expectations regarding potential interest rate moves by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) are leading this increase in exchange rates. All eyes will be on the meeting to be held in Jackson Hole today, and the speech that Fed Chair Warsh will deliver at 17:00 is awaited with curiosity.
According to CME FedWatch data, it is stated that market participants are pricing in a 33.7 percent probability of a Fed interest rate hike at the September meeting, and a 74.2 percent probability by the end of the year. Rising interest rates significantly affect risk perception and capital flows on a global scale.
THE STATUS OF GOLD
Gold, a traditional hedge against inflation, is negatively affected by high-interest-rate environments as it does not provide interest income. For this reason, it is stated that upward interest rate movements may play a role in reducing the appeal of gold.
