Economic data reveals millions of citizens are under legal proceedings: Debts are rising

According to data from the Banks Association of Turkey, the number of people placed under legal proceedings for failing to pay their debts reached 1 million 39 thousand in the first five months of the year. The amount of non-performing loans in individual credits increased by 177 percent compared to last year, reaching 199 billion TL.

The number of people who fell under legal proceedings due to individual credit or credit card debt increased in May 2025 compared to the same period last year.

According to data shared by the Banks Association of Turkey (TBB), the number of people placed under legal proceedings due to individual credit card debt in May 2025 was recorded as 162 thousand 617, while the number of people placed under legal proceedings due to individual credit debt was 171 thousand 123.

In the January-May 2025 period, the total number of people placed under legal proceedings due to individual credit or credit card debt reached 1 million 39 thousand, an increase of 39 percent compared to the same period last year.
