Hafize Gaye Erkan, Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB), who had been in the spotlight due to allegations regarding her family, resigned on the evening of February 2 after requesting to be relieved of her duties.
While TCMB Monetary Policy Committee member Fatih Karahan was appointed to replace Erkan, the appointment decision published in the Official Gazette with the signature of AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that Erkan had been removed from her post.
Minutes after the appointment decision was published, Fatih Karahan's social media accounts were closed, and the fact that some posts were deleted when the accounts were reactivated today became a topic of discussion.
IT HAS EMERGED THAT HE CRITICIZED THE AKP'S ECONOMIC POLICIES
The Currency-Protected Deposit (KKM) system, which was implemented as of December 21, 2021, to prevent sudden exchange rate spikes, was presented to the public by the AKP in its early days as 'liraization,' and the system was showered with praise.
Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek, who took the helm of the economy following the May 28 elections, described KKM as a burden, and as a result of joint steps taken with the TCMB to liquidate the system, KKM experienced a decline of over 800 billion liras in an 8-month period.
Fatih Karahan, who was brought to the head of the TCMB, had shared articles on his social media account stating that KKM had lost its appeal, and had responded to a question directed at him with statements criticizing the AKP's explanations.
According to the report on Halk TV, Karahan responded to the question, "Mr. Fatih, what was the reason for the new economic management's desire to exit KKM?" by stating, "The main reason for wanting to exit KKM is to ensure price stability. Because the money in KKM cannot be accepted as 'Turkish lira,' contrary to what has been stated."

However, Karahan closed his Twitter account minutes after taking office and deleted these posts when he reopened the account later. The hasty deletion of this view, which contradicted the posts that the AKP had marketed to the markets as 'liraization' for months and which Erdoğan had defended by claiming the money in KKM was 'Turkish lira,' did not go unnoticed.
