The start date for 2026 property tax payments is approaching. The period for paying the first installment of the property tax, for which owners of residences, workplaces, plots, and land are liable as they are every year, begins on March 1. Citizens must complete their payments by the end of the business day on May 31, 2026.
In accordance with current legal regulations, property tax is collected in two installments each year. While the first installment is collected in the spring, the deadline for the second installment extends until the end of November.
Experts remind citizens that as the payment date approaches, congestion may increase at municipal counters and in online systems, and they advise citizens to complete their transactions without waiting for the last day. This is because late payment interest and surcharges will apply to those who do not make payments within the specified period.
THROUGH WHICH CHANNELS CAN PROPERTY TAX BE PAID?
Property owners can make their property tax payments directly to the municipalities of the province or district where the property is located, or through various digital methods. The main channels for payments are as follows:
- Payment by cash or credit card at municipal counters
- Digital transaction options via municipalities' websites and mobile applications
- Branches and internet banking channels of contracted banks
- Online payment via the e-Government platform
- Debt inquiry and quick payment links
These methods offer great convenience, especially for citizens living abroad or those who own multiple properties.
BEWARE OF DELAYS: INTEREST WILL BE CHARGED
Taxpayers who miss the legal payment period will be required to pay late payment surcharges and interest at the rate determined by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance. Therefore, it is of great importance not to delay payment dates.
WHO IS EXEMPT FROM PROPERTY TAX?
There are also some situations where exemption from property tax is granted. Retirees, individuals with disabilities, housewives with no income, relatives of martyrs, and veterans who own a single residence not exceeding 200 square meters in gross area are exempt from paying this tax by law. However, those who wish to benefit from this right are required to apply to their own municipalities and submit a declaration. There is no automatic exemption.
DEADLINE IS MAY 31, 2026
The last day for the 2026 first installment payments of property tax has been announced as May 31. It is recommended that taxpayers make their payments on time to avoid late payment penalties and also check their exemption status with their municipalities.
