Four-pronged fight against the informal economy continues: Social media now being utilized

The Ministry of Treasury and Finance, which has been accelerating its audits regarding the informal economy and under-reporting for some time, has updated the channels through which citizens can submit reports on these issues. In addition to WhatsApp, social media tools such as X and Instagram have been added to the reporting mechanisms.

According to a report by Hüseyin Gökçe in Ekonomim; the Revenue Administration announced that, as part of the efforts to combat the informal economy carried out by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, reporting channels have been updated to allow citizens to submit reports and complaints more easily and quickly.

Accordingly, applications can be made via the Revenue Administration website (gib.gov.tr), the digital.gib.gov.tr address, as well as the GIB mobile application and the ALO 189 Tax Communication Center.

Furthermore, applications such as “BIP Tax Reporting Service, X and Instagram Reporting Accounts (via “DM-Direct Message” on “gibihbar”), and the WhatsApp Reporting Line (0 552 189 0 189)” have also been put into service for reporting.

The Revenue Administration listed the issues that citizens can report as follows:

Application of Low VAT Rates

Requesting Payment via IBAN / PTT Check

Failure to Issue Receipts/Invoices

Use of Another Business's POS Device

Lack of Tax Registration

Issuance or Use of Fake/Misleading Documents

Payment of Personnel Wages in Cash

Failure to Declare Rental Income

Underpayment of Title Deed Fees

Sale of Contraband Products
