Frost disaster hits produce: 'Prices will skyrocket'

The Çukurova region of Adana is facing a major agricultural crisis due to a frost event that began on February 22 and lasted for four days. Nighttime temperatures dropping as low as minus 8 degrees Celsius caused losses ranging from 50 to 80 percent in many crops, particularly citrus fruits.

Ahencan Tayakısı, Head of the Adana Branch of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers, revealed the scale of the frost disaster during a press conference. Tayakısı stated, 'Serious losses were experienced in products such as tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, watermelons, citrus fruits, and nectarines. Depending on the variety, our producers' crops suffered damage between 50 and 80 percent. This situation caused agricultural production to end almost before it even began,' he said.

The effects of the frost disaster will not be limited to producers alone. Tayakısı noted that this disaster will be directly reflected in fruit and vegetable prices. 'This situation in the Eastern Mediterranean region has caused great damage to the country's economy as well as to agriculture and farmers. Producers, consumers, exporters, and agricultural supply dealers will be negatively affected by this situation. Our public, meanwhile, will be forced to access food at higher prices due to the frost disaster and fuel price hikes,' he added.

These developments could also put Turkey's food sovereignty at risk. The crop losses suffered by farmers could negatively impact the country's agricultural production capacity, leading to further increases in food prices.
