Gradual retirement is on the way for those who cannot complete their premium days! New conditions are expected

Those who cannot retire because they have not completed their required number of premium days are closely following the gradual retirement regulation. While approximately 2 million people retired in March 2023 with the Retirement Age Trainees (EYT) regulation, those who started insurance after 1999 could not benefit from this right.

As the Draft Law on Amendments to Certain Laws, which includes economic regulations, is being discussed in Parliament, gradual retirement has come to the agenda once again.

SGK Chief Specialist İsa Karakaş stated that the issue is experiencing significant momentum, saying, "It has become one of Ankara's priority agenda items."

WHAT WILL THE CONDITIONS FOR GRADUAL RETIREMENT BE?

In the current system, 25 years of insurance and 9,000 premium days are required for men to retire, while 20 years of insurance and 7,200 premium days are required for women.

With the gradual retirement regulation, it is expected that these conditions will be relaxed or a gradual transition process will be introduced.

Karakaş stated, "The issue of gradual retirement has become one of the most debated topics in Turkey. EYT was resolved after 24 years of debate, while gradual retirement has only been on the agenda for two years. This process will also be resolved in the end."

WHEN MIGHT GRADUAL RETIREMENT BE INTRODUCED?

While İsa Karakaş did not provide a definitive date for the regulation, he indicated that the process could take a few more years. Emphasizing that those waiting should be patient, Karakaş said, "Based on my experience, I can say that the solution to this problem could reach around 2027."
