While the Turkish Lira loses purchasing power day by day due to the cost of living and record-breaking exchange rates, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek is being targeted not only by the opposition but also by media outlets close to the government.
Kısa Dalga columnist Sedat Bozkurt shared inside information he obtained regarding Şimşek in his column today.
Writing that Şimşek is satisfied with the economic trajectory, Bozkurt stated, "He looks at the issue exactly like a technocrat. The decline in the public's purchasing power and poverty are not among his parameters. For him, it is all about inflation and interest rates. He has also made President Erdoğan accept this perspective. Erdoğan's full support for Şimşek continues," he said.
While the Yeni Şafak newspaper, a media outlet of the Albayrak Group, occasionally attacks the economic management led by Mehmet Şimşek with harsh words, it was learned that Şimşek said regarding the matter, "They just never liked me, I don't know why."
Stating that all resources were diverted due to the earthquakes on February 6, 2023, Şimşek argued that the single-digit inflation target would be met in 2028.
Writing that the only issue Şimşek complains about is the matter of public austerity, Bozkurt stated, "Minister Şimşek also complains that he has been unable to implement austerity in the public sector despite issuing circular after circular. Although he does not give specific examples, it is immediately understood that when he speaks of the entire public sector, he includes the Presidency in this as well," he said.
Reporting that in his meetings with his inner circle, Şimşek said, "I am at my post, there is no problem in that sense. Our work does not end after inflation falls. Our real work will begin after that," Bozkurt added, "Şimşek has slowly begun to express that he will continue his duty even after the elections to be held at the end of 2027 or in 2028. It seems he knows something," he said.
