With the announcement of annual inflation data, the expectation of a raise for millions of pensioners has returned to the agenda.
Following the increase of the minimum wage to 22,104 TL, the lowest pension is also expected to increase in parallel.
PENSIONERS' EXPECTATION FOR A RAISE IS HIGH
Due to the rising cost of living throughout 2023, pensioners are demanding an additional welfare share on their base salaries.
However, the government has not yet made a statement regarding the demands for additional raises for pensions.
The regulation, which is expected to be submitted to Parliament in the last week of January, will directly affect the salaries of millions of pensioners.
In recent years, the lowest pension has been increased in proportion to the minimum wage. In January 2023, while the minimum wage rose to 8,507 TL, the lowest pension was set at 65 percent of this figure, becoming 5,500 TL.
In July of the same year, while the minimum wage was raised to 11,402 TL, the lowest pension was increased to 7,500 TL at a rate of 66 percent.
At the beginning of 2024, the lowest pension was set at 12,500 TL, a rate corresponding to 73 percent of the minimum wage.
Social Security Institution (SGK) experts predict that this rate could take shape at the 68 percent level with the new raise to be made in January and that salaries could reach 15,000 TL.
PENSIONERS DEMAND WELFARE SHARE
Pensioners, who argue that an additional welfare share regulation should be made beyond reflecting the inflation difference to salaries, want this increase to be at a level that will support their purchasing power.
