Economic fluctuations and rising international geopolitical tension have led to a renewed rise in deposit interest rates at banks in recent weeks. Short-term accounts have come to the fore, especially for those looking to evaluate TL deposits, with interest rates at various banks moving above the 40 percent level.
Following the Central Bank's interest rate decisions in January, deposit interest rates, which had fallen to the 35-38 percent range, have started to rise again as a result of new regulations and increased funding costs due to measures taken by the Central Bank and the Capital Markets Board. With recent developments, interest rates offered for different maturities present opportunities for investors.
The average annual interest rates currently applied by banks on Turkish Lira deposits vary according to maturity. Rates have peaked at 43.19% for accounts with maturities up to 1 month and 45.63% for deposits with maturities up to 3 months. Accounts with 6-month maturities are at 43.72%, while 1-year maturities are at 41.86%. Those who prefer the longest maturity encounter an annual return of 36.14%.
One of the topics investors are most curious about is the monthly and annual return on 1 million TL. Especially for deposits with maturities up to 3 months, the monthly interest return that can be obtained for 1 million TL, including tax deductions, is around 37,500 TL. Similarly, while the annual earnings reach 456,300 TL, the total return can exceed the 500,000 TL threshold with compound interest application.
There are also significant differences in the current rates offered by public and private banks. While public banks generally offer interest at the 38.75% level, rates at private sector banks vary between 40% and 45%.
