THE LARGEST BANKNOTE SINCE 2009
While the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB) holds the authority to print money, the 200 TL note has remained the largest denomination since 2009.
It had been claimed that work had begun on printing 500 TL and 1,000 TL banknotes due to the decline in the purchasing power of the 200 TL note amid rising inflation, its increased share in circulation, and its insufficiency in payments leading to an increase in volume.

Currently, 5, 10, 20, 100, and 200 TL banknotes are in circulation. The 200 TL banknotes first entered circulation on January 1, 2009.
Central Bank data revealed that in 16 years, the share of 200 TL banknotes has increased by 403 percent, rising from 16 percent to 80.4 percent.

STATEMENT FROM THE CENTRAL BANK
TCMB Governor Fatih Karahan had stated on August 8 regarding the claims that '500 and 1000 TL banknotes will be printed', "I have made statements on this matter in the past, and I have nothing more to say on it. We are monitoring changes in the composition of denominations in circulation. If a need is identified, we will take the necessary steps."

WHEN WAS THE 200 TL BANKNOTE RELEASED?
The TCMB first released the 200 TL banknotes into the market on January 1, 2009. These banknotes featured the portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on the front and Yunus Emre on the back.
The first banknotes bore the signatures of the then-TCMB Governor Durmuş Yılmaz and Deputy Governor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erdem Başçı.
