TÜRK-İŞ President Ergün Atalay visited the Tekgıda-İş Union Kocaeli Provincial Representative Office.
Holding a press conference after the visit, Atalay stated that problems in working life continue, even if they change form. Atalay expressed that they are representing a society where only 14 percent are unionized, and that this picture does not suit the country, especially the unions.
Touching upon the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine crisis, the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes, and finally Israel's attacks on Palestine, Atalay said, "Israel continues to brutally kill children, women, and people. They say, 'Hamas did it.' Go fight your battle with Hamas, go fight your battle with Hezbollah. What do you want from babies, women, and children?"
Atalay emphasized that in working life, even if political views differ, everyone has an obligation to take a stance in favor of labor, evaluating: "We should especially question ourselves. We workers, unions, will only achieve success when we row the boat in the same direction, but as long as one of us goes to A and the other to B, capital and bosses will continue to use us."
'THERE WILL BE 2 MEN AND 2 WOMEN ON THE MINIMUM WAGE COMMISSION'
Emphasizing that they have explained the problems of temporary workers and continue to explain the subcontracting issue, Atalay demanded that the work initiated regarding the subcontracting issue before the elections be concluded.
Reminding that negotiations regarding the minimum wage will begin in the coming days, Atalay said:
"We will establish the commission after November 20. Let a minimum wage earner sit at this table, not us. I have been explaining the minimum wage for 20 years. There are no minimum wage workers in unions. Where there is a union, there is family allowance, bonuses, shuttle service, and food. We are making an effort for 8 million workers as if they were our members, part of our family. God willing, we will establish the new minimum wage commission after November 20. We might establish the commission in a way that has never been done before in Turkey. There will be 2 women and 2 men on the commission. In other words, those sitting there will decide what needs to be done. And the unionists will abide by them."
