Prof. Dr. Şenol Babuşcu, Head of the Department of International Finance and Banking at Başkent University, evaluated the change in the "Last Resort Supply Tariff" limits by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA).
Noting that with this decision, residences and commercial establishments with an annual consumption of 5 thousand kWh will no longer be able to use subsidized electricity, Babuşcu stated that a hidden price hike has been applied to electricity.
In a post on his social media account, Babuşcu said, "Residences and commercial establishments with an annual consumption of 5 thousand kWh will not be able to use subsidized electricity. Those falling into this group will have to find their own supplier and purchase their electricity. In the current situation, their bill, which is for example 200 TL, will skyrocket and rise to around 500 TL."
Babuşcu included the following statements in his post:
"The Energy Market Regulatory Authority took an important decision yesterday. The 'Last Resort Supply Tariff' limits have been renewed. The new tariff regulates that subscribers who are above a certain consumption limit in electricity will use electricity at real costs without government subsidies.
In accordance with the EMRA decision, the limits applicable to residential subscribers have been reduced to 5 thousand kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, effective from January 1, 2025. Accordingly, residences and commercial establishments with an annual consumption of 5 thousand kWh will not be able to use subsidized electricity. Those falling into this group will have to find their own supplier and purchase their electricity. In the current situation, their bill, which is for example 200 TL, will skyrocket and rise to around 500 TL.
There are approximately 45 million residential electricity subscribers in our country. 20 percent of these subscribers, meaning around 10 million residential subscribers, will be affected by this situation."
