Housing and rent expenses top the list in TurkStat data
In 2023, the largest share of household budgets was allocated to housing and rent expenses. Housing and rent took the highest share of household consumption expenditures. Transportation ranked second, while food and non-alcoholic beverage expenses ranked third.

Across Turkey, housing and rent expenses accounted for the largest portion of household consumption expenditures last year, at 23.9 percent.
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has published its "household consumption expenditure" statistics for 2023.
AREAS WITH THE HIGHEST EXPENDITURE
Accordingly, housing and rent expenses took the highest share of household consumption expenditures nationwide at 23.9 percent. Transportation followed in second place with 21.9 percent, and food and non-alcoholic beverage expenses ranked third with 20.6 percent.
The lowest shares in total consumption expenditures were held by insurance and financial services at 0.8 percent, educational services at 1 percent, and entertainment, sports, and cultural expenses at 1.9 percent.
The average monthly consumption expenditure, calculated by taking into account household size and composition, was estimated at 24 thousand 383 liras per household and 12 thousand 521 liras per equivalent individual.
CHANGING EXPENDITURE PATTERNS
Households whose primary source of income is salaries, wages, or daily earnings allocated 22.8 percent to transportation, 22.2 percent to housing and rent, and 18.9 percent to food and non-alcoholic beverages, while households with entrepreneurial income spent 27.3 percent on transportation, 19.7 percent on housing and rent, and 19.5 percent on food and non-alcoholic beverages. These results showed that expenditure patterns vary according to the primary source of income.
When looking at the distribution of consumption expenditures last year by 20 percent income groups, it was observed that households in the first 20 percent group, which is the lowest income group, allocated 36.6 percent to food and non-alcoholic beverage expenses, 29.2 percent to housing and rent expenses, 8.8 percent to transportation expenses, and 5.4 percent to furniture and household goods expenses.
Households in the fifth 20 percent group, which is the highest income group, spent 28.3 percent on transportation, 21 percent on housing and rent, 14.5 percent on food and non-alcoholic beverages, and 6.9 percent on restaurants and hotels. These data revealed that low-income households allocate more than twice the share to food compared to high-income households.
CONSUMPTION EXPENDITURES
When looking at the distribution of consumption expenditures last year by household size, it was recorded that single-person households allocated 31.8 percent to housing and rent, 18.7 percent to transportation, and 16.3 percent to food and non-alcoholic beverages.
In the expenditures of households with 7 or more people, food and non-alcoholic beverages took a 30.2 percent share, housing and rent 19.9 percent, and transportation 14.9 percent. These data showed that single-person households allocate 1.5 times more of their budget to housing and rent than large households.
