The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has announced the Household Domestic Tourism, Q4: October-December and Annual 2023 data. According to the data, 9 million 616 thousand residents in Turkey went on trips in the fourth quarter, which consists of October, November, and December.
The total number of trips made by travelers with one or more overnight stays within the country increased by 32% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 11 million 509 thousand trips. Travelers in this quarter spent 77 million 472 thousand nights. The average number of overnight stays was 6.7 nights.
HOW MUCH MONEY WAS SPENT?
Domestic tourism travel expenditures in the fourth quarter of 2023 increased by 140% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, amounting to 45 billion 734 million 935 thousand TL. Personal expenditures accounted for 93% of these expenses with 42 billion 526 million 11 thousand TL, while package tour expenditures accounted for 7% with 3 billion 208 million 924 thousand TL. The average expenditure per trip was 3,974 TL.
This year, total travel expenditures for domestic trips increased by 101% compared to last year, reaching 229 billion 795 million 451 thousand TL. Personal expenditures accounted for 91% of these expenses with 209 billion 128 million 153 thousand TL, while package tour expenditures accounted for 9% with 20 billion 667 million 298 thousand TL. The average expenditure per trip was 3,739 TL.
189.9% INCREASE IN ACCOMMODATION EXPENDITURES
In this quarter, when the distribution of expenditure types within total travel expenditures was examined, food and beverage expenditures had the highest share with 30.2%, followed by transportation expenditures with 30%, and accommodation expenditures with 11.6%. When the change rates of these expenditure types compared to the same period of the previous year were examined, an increase of 136.2% was observed in food and beverage expenditures, 126% in transportation expenditures, and 189.9% in accommodation expenditures.
WHO WAS VISITED?
In this quarter, "trips, entertainment, vacation" ranked second among the purposes for travel with 26.7%, and "health" ranked third with 5.2%.
When the purposes for travel were evaluated annually, "visiting relatives" ranked first with 58.3%, followed by "trips, entertainment, vacation" in second place with 33.1%, and "health" in third place with 3.7%.
