Huge electricity price hike on the horizon: The date has been set! 'Preliminary preparations are underway...'

As electricity distribution companies express that they have been suffering financial losses due to the lack of tariff changes for 8 months, energy management has begun preparations for a price hike following increasing complaints. A 20 percent increase in the current tariff is on the agenda, and the date being discussed has begun to clarify.

The rise in inflation has also significantly increased energy costs. Following the last electricity price hike in July 2024, it has been alleged that urban electricity distribution companies are preparing for a price increase due to prices remaining stagnant for 8 months.

Companies are demanding a price hike, claiming that they have suffered losses of at least 50 billion TL due to the failure to update distribution fees. The date being discussed for the expected increase in electricity tariffs has also begun to clarify.

20 PERCENT INCREASE ON THE AGENDA FOR APRIL

Journalist Olcay Aydilek stated in a post on his social media account, "In the corridors of Ankara, there is talk that electricity prices could be raised on April 1st. Preliminary preparations are also being made for this. The rate of increase being discussed for electricity, effective from April 1st, is 20 percent. The stance of the economic management will be decisive in shaping the decision."

While it is noted that the price hike decision could have a direct impact on inflation, it is assessed that the economic management may intervene in the rate of the increase. The hike is expected to cover both residential and industrial subscribers. It is stated that with the regulation implemented in February, bills for residential subscribers consuming more than 417 kilowatt-hours per month could see an increase of 3 to 4 times.
