A new tariff for mandatory traffic insurance has come into effect. While premiums have been increased by approximately 2 percent, the amounts drivers will pay vary based on their claims history, risk level, vehicle type, and province.

According to data from the Insurance Information and Monitoring Center, the mandatory traffic insurance premium for a car owner in the fourth risk level in Istanbul has become 19,405 liras. Drivers in the riskiest group face premiums far above this amount.

For an internal combustion vehicle owner in the zero risk level in Istanbul, the premium has risen to 58,214 liras. The premium to be paid by a driver in the 8th level, which has the highest level of no-claims, was determined to be 9,702 liras. Thus, the difference between the riskiest level and the lowest-risk level has reached approximately 6 times.

In Ankara, the premium for a driver in the zero risk level was 56,566 liras, and the premium for a driver in the 8th level was 9,428 liras. In İzmir, premiums for the same levels will be applied as 54,919 liras and 9,153 liras, respectively.

PREMIUMS ARE HIGHER FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

The premium difference in commercial taxis also drew attention. In Istanbul, the premium for a commercial taxi in the zero risk level was determined to be 172,447 liras, and the premium for the 8th level was 28,741 liras. In Ankara, the highest premium was 167,566 liras and the lowest was 27,928 liras; in İzmir, these amounts were 162,686 liras and 27,114 liras.

Premiums for buses with 31 or more seats reached even higher levels. In Istanbul, while the mandatory traffic insurance premium for a bus in the zero risk level rose to 423,661 liras, the premium for the 8th level was announced as 70,610 liras.

As of 2026, a fine of 1,246 liras is applied to drivers of vehicles without mandatory traffic insurance. Additionally, the vehicle can be banned from traffic until the lack of insurance is resolved.

In the event of an accident with an uninsured vehicle, in addition to a fine of 2,039 liras, the damage caused to the other party must also be paid. If the policy is not taken out or renewed on time, a 5 percent surcharge is added to the premium for every 30 days of delay; this additional premium rate can go up to a maximum of 50 percent.

To fall into the zero risk level, which is considered the riskiest driver group, the driver must have been involved in 3 or more at-fault traffic accidents during the year they were in the 1st level, and compensation must have been paid from the insurance due to these accidents. A 200 percent surcharge is applied to the mandatory traffic insurance premium for drivers in this group.
