Last day for driver's license renewal: Penalties start tomorrow, billions could enter state coffers

There is a last-minute rush across Turkey for applications to renew old-style driver's licenses. If approximately 2 million people do not renew their licenses, they will be forced to pay fees of up to 7,438 TL under the penalty tariff that will take effect starting August 1. Authorities have announced that the deadline will not be extended and that procedures must be completed urgently.

The process for renewing old-style driver's licenses across Turkey has reached its end. Today is the last day to apply for a license renewal before penalties take effect. Despite the extreme heat, long queues have formed in front of civil registry offices as citizens scramble to renew their licenses at the last minute.


According to information provided by economic journalist Bora Erdin, approximately 2 million people across Turkey have not yet renewed their old driver's licenses. If these individuals wish to renew their licenses as of August 1, 2025, they will be required to pay 7,438.60 TL. This figure represents approximately 500 times the cost of the renewal process that was previously available for 15 TL.

If these 2 million people are forced to renew their licenses under the penalty tariff, a total of approximately 14 billion 877 million TL will enter the state's coffers.

This development creates a significant agenda item both in terms of individual budgets and state revenue items. While citizens complain about the chaos and density, many are expressing grievances caused by the system being left to the last day.

The General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs had announced that the deadline would not be extended and that the penalty tariff would be finalized as of August 1. For this reason, citizens who have not yet made their applications must definitely make an appointment via e-Devlet during the day or apply to the nearest civil registry office.
