Major increase on the way: Hidden price hike in electricity bills
With the regulation to be applied to electricity bills in the new year, government subsidies will be removed for consumers exceeding the 4,000-kilowatt limit, a move being viewed as a hidden price hike.

As of 2026, a significant change will be made to electricity bills. Mahmut Şahin, Chairman of the Consumers Union, stated that while this regulation is not officially labeled as a price hike, bills will increase due to the cancellation of the discount provided by the state. "We are facing a situation of a price hike in electricity," Şahin said, noting that consumers who exceed the 4,000-kilowatt limit will pay 150-160 percent more.
The Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO) argues that this regulation does not meet the basic electricity needs of a four-person family, predicting that 15 million households and 45 million people will be affected. The EMO stated that this practice constitutes a disguised price hike.
The system, which previously only covered large industrial facilities, was expanded to include households in 2018. In 2025, a 5,000-kilowatt limit was set with government support, but this limit will be reduced to 4,000 kilowatts in 2026. The EMO, arguing that the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) is acting in favor of the market rather than the public interest, is awaiting the outcome of the lawsuit it filed for the cancellation of this limit.
