Marvel Studios collapses

The film is a direct sequel to the 2019 Captain Marvel, which introduced Brie Larson as the former fighter pilot superhero Carol Danvers. 

In the sequel, Captain Marvel's powers become entangled with those of Ms. Marvel, played by Iman Vellani, and Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris. This situation forces the trio to work together when a dangerous threat emerges.

According to Deadline, the three-day total gross for The Marvels in the US remained at 47 million dollars, based on the lower end of initial estimates.

WORST OPENING EVER

Grossing 63 million dollars outside the US, the film was able to earn a total of 110 million dollars worldwide.

This revenue officially marks the worst opening weekend for any Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

In 2008, The Incredible Hulk, the second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opened with 55.4 million dollars in the US. With 47 million dollars, The Marvels has fallen behind even that.

A FILM OF FIRSTS

While 61 percent of those who bought tickets for The Marvels were men, 45 percent of the revenue came from IMAX and other large-format screens.

The Marvels, the 33rd film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marks a first for superhero films by having three female leads. 

CRITICS ARE ALSO DIVIDED

The film, directed by 34-year-old Nia DaCosta—the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios production—also received an average score on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. 

Receiving both positive and negative reviews, the film currently has a score of 62 out of 100. The audience score for The Marvels is higher than that of the critics. According to reviews from more than a thousand users, the film has a score of 83.
