Meal prices at Ege University have seen a hike of over 200 percent. The cost of a meal, which was 6.5 liras last year, has risen to 20 liras.
"KYK LOANS AND SCHOLARSHIPS ARE 1,250 TL PER MONTH, MONTHLY MEAL COSTS ARE 1,800 TL"
Ege University students expressed their reaction to the hikes in a statement they published on social media.
The statement reads as follows:
"Ege University announced on September 22, 2023, that there will be an inconceivable hike of over 200 percent in cafeteria prices. Our school has now added a nutrition crisis to the problems such as high inflation, rent, and housing crises that have been strangling us at every stage of life and making our lives unlivable, with this decision that disregards students. While we have long been unable to even meet our housing needs with KYK scholarships and loans, and have been forced to live in conditions contrary to human dignity; we are now facing the threat of hunger with this decision. With this new decision, the monthly meal expense of an Ege University student reaches 1,800 liras. Under these conditions, where KYK scholarships and loans are 1,250 TL, we do not accept the exorbitant increase in the price of a meal service that is already nutritionally poor and inadequate, while completely disregarding the students. While the university administration does not compromise its own comfort under any circumstances; we know that the price they are trying to make us pay under today's conditions is the bill for the crisis, and we reject it.
We demand that this decision be withdrawn and that a healthy and affordably priced cafeteria service be provided by including students, who are a component of the university, in the decision-making process."
