Minister of Trade Ömer Bolat made statements regarding the strategy Turkey will follow against the additional customs tariffs introduced by the US. Bolat stated, "There is significant uncertainty, but we want to emerge from this process without damage. This is our primary duty. Our second duty is to increase our exports by making moves in favor of our country. In this direction, we are working together with the public and private sectors."
Emphasizing that Turkey follows an export-oriented path in foreign trade, Bolat said, "The 10 percent additional customs tariff introduced by the US is not a positive development for us. However, higher rates were applied to some countries we compete with. This has put us in a relatively more advantageous position. We have taken action to create new opportunities in the US market."
Ömer Bolat also pointed to the possibility that countries with declining exports to the US might turn to Turkey's traditional markets, adding, "For this reason, we will conduct a multi-faceted trade diplomacy."
