Minister Tunç's statement on the 25 percent rent cap: "It will no longer be necessary"

The final word on the debates over whether the 25 percent rent increase practice will continue or end was put by Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç. The date that tenants were waiting for with concern has been determined.

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç stated regarding the 25 percent rent increase practice, "It will have ended as of July; of course, the legislator's discretion was involved to prevent exorbitant increases all at once." he said.

Reminding that the mediation period for the backlog of rent lawsuits was initiated as of September 1, 2023, Minister Tunç said that there would be no need for the 25 percent rent increase situation to continue from now on.

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç stated regarding rent hikes: "The 25 percent cap was introduced in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) to prevent grievances caused by exorbitant rent increases. Subsequently, concerns regarding these rent hikes persisted, and it was extended for another year. The 25 percent rent cap will expire as of July 2024. Of course, the legislator's discretion was exercised to prevent a sudden surge in rents. We launched the mediation period for rent disputes as of September 1. We believe that there will be no need for the 25 percent rent increase situation to continue from now on."
