Ministry officially announces: Bad news for those who hiked prices after the deposit system!

Businesses that have implemented price hikes far exceeding costs, particularly in the bottled water and beverage sectors, are being closely scrutinized.

Some manufacturers and retail outlets that turned the recent update to the deposit participation fee—implemented to encourage recycling—into an opportunity for price hikes have been placed under close surveillance by the Ministry of Trade. The Ministry announced that price increases exceeding the changes in costs for plastic, glass, and metal-packaged beverages will be considered "unfair."
The Ministry of Trade has issued direct warnings to many businesses, ranging from nationwide chain markets to local retail points. While a rapid investigation process has been initiated regarding companies that set prices above realistic costs, it has been clearly communicated to industry representatives that legal sanctions may be on the agenda.
Field inspections regarding businesses found to have made unnecessary increases in price tariffs have been launched primarily in bottled water products. Inspection teams are monitoring price changes at production, distribution, and retail points, and excessive price hikes reflected to the consumer are being reported.
The statement made by the Ministry included the following remarks:
“Following the update of the deposit participation fee applied to plastic, glass, and metal-packaged beverages in our country to support recycling and the efficient use of resources, it has been observed that various manufacturers and sellers have reflected increases to consumer prices that exceed the cost increase.
In this context, the matter has been immediately taken under investigation by our Ministry of Trade; national and local markets, as well as relevant industry representatives, have been clearly warned that price increases made beyond cost increases will be evaluated as unfair price practices.
Our Ministry of Trade has initiated inspections targeting manufacturers, suppliers, and retail points for relevant beverage products, primarily bottled water. Any price increase that exceeds cost increases and victimizes the consumer will be evaluated within the scope of unfair pricing, and the necessary administrative sanctions will be applied with determination.
As the Ministry of Trade, in line with our environmental policies, we will continue to take all necessary administrative and legal measures to protect the rights of our consumers, market order, and fair competition conditions.
