The "University Students' Cost of Living Research" published by the Istanbul Planning Agency has been released. According to the report, the cost of living for a university student staying in a private dormitory in Istanbul has increased by 57.17 percent in one year, rising to 22,920 TL per month.
The monthly cost for a student living in a three-person shared apartment increased by 49.59 percent, rising from 12,535 TL to 18,750 TL. According to the research, the highest increase in spending was observed in culture-arts and stationery expenses, while the lowest increase was recorded in transportation and technology expenditures.
HOUSING IS THE LARGEST EXPENSE ITEM
While housing stands out as the largest expense item for students, expenses such as groceries, dining out, utility bills, personal care, and cultural activities also contribute to the rise in the cost of living.
Housing costs for students staying in private dormitories were calculated using data obtained from field research, while rental costs for students living in student apartments were calculated based on average rental prices determined at the neighborhood level.
In the research, students' transportation costs were calculated based on the monthly student subscription fee, and different calculations were made to more clearly see the share of housing and utility bill payments.
